It just didn't seem like my kind of book. Then, after multiple people, from different parts of my life, told me to read it, I finally did. And loved it. This was back in 1995. I don't even know why exactly, except that Owen is so...so...Owen. With that voice and the compunction of his to work things through somehow - it's just a good long human story with quirks. But then, I guess I'm an Irving fan, really. I don't always like how his stories work out, but his characters and a certain poingnancy always stick, long after reading the last word on the last page of the book. Well done Jill. I had to laugh at the PW review; ouch is right but wonderfully so. I am so glad I read this - I am proud of myself and feel like a survived some kind of important milestone. I do wonder how much of this book I 'missed' but am not at all interested in really finding out (for ex, there are other books to overwork a theme of bff-causing-mother's-death?!?!
