Housekeeping

This post unintentionally inspired a guessing game, because I chose a picture that was too small.  For those of you who are still curious, the book was Housekeeping, by Marilynne Robinson.  And the winner is Word Lily. Yay!!!!!

I started the book a couple of weeks ago.  By page 18 I realized I didn’t have the patience to work my way through the dense (although lyrical) prose.  So off it goes to a new reader.

Congrats to Word Lily…please send me your address?

A little more housekeeping (ha, ha)…

 Housekeeping

A belatedly huge thank you to whoever nominated me for BBAW awards.  I received nominations for Best Community Builder (not really sure why, on that one), Most Humorous/Funny Blog, Best Literary Fiction Blog, and Most Eclectic Taste.  Thank you, thank you, thank you…the nominations warmed the cockles of my heart.  And made my day.

So as a way to say thanks and I love you too, I’m going to give away my copy of one of my favoritist books of the year.  I raved about it yesterday, and would love for one of you to read it.  All you have to do to get your name in the running is tell me what your favorite book (so far) of the year is.

Also.  Have you seen this?!?  And have I told you that I’m planning a trip to Croatia next May/June?  Wah!!

I struggled my way to the end of Housekeeping and it didn't improve, so I sympathise.

My favourite book of the year so far is Hunger Games (it was only released here in the UK this year) I am really looking forward to Catching Fire! I think Her Fearful Symmetry may top them both though.

Thank you, thank you! I hope I like Housekeeping better than you (and FarmLaneBooks) did. Email sent.

Any particular reason for Croatia? My husband wants to go there!

My favoritist book so far is "If You Come Softly" by Jacqueline Woodson (YA book).

My favoritist book this year has been Foreign Tongue. I had to struggle between that and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo – but TGWTDT wasn't released this year, so that made my life so much easier. Fhew! Thanks so much for the contest. I've got my fingers crossed. I was thinking yesterday after I read that post that it was a shame you couldn't submit that for your BBAW awards. Maybe next year?

I am excited for your trip to Croatia!

I don't think I'll be making it to the convention either (if it happens). I already have two trips to NYC in the the works next year as it is.

I've read some very good books so far this year, but if I have to pick the one favorite, it would be The Uncommon Reader. I just loved that one.

    Congrats on the nominations!

My favorite book so far this year…that's a hard one. I think it's a tie between Galway Bay by Mary Pat Kelly and An Obsolete Honor by Helena P. Schrader.

I haven't been in any hurry to read Housekeeping yet. I wasn't crazy about Gilead. My favorite book so far this year is probably Reliable Wife. But The Help is next on my to read list and that is getting such good reviews.

I take it you mean favorite book "read" this year rather than "published" this year…if so, my favorite book read would definitely be "Unaccustomed Earth" by Jhumpa Lahiri. In fact you got me going and writing a blog post about it :-) !

Your favorite book looks like a fascinating read and if I don't win, I'm still planning to read it sometime.

Croatia…wow. those will be interesting blog posts for sure!
