October is a spooky month! And to help you get in the mood, Heather of Age 30+ … A Lifetime of Books and I are hosting a month of Dueling Monsters!

Here at Fizzy Thoughts we’ll be staking reading Bram Stoker’s DRACULA. Those other ghouls at Age 30+ … A Lifetime of Books will be confronting taking on FRANKENSTEIN. Heather and I will both post discussion questions for our own book as well as questions comparing the two (in case you’ve read both).
Posting Schedule
-
10/1 – we begin with a list of questions to consider as you read – I’ll post mine here later today
-
10/15 – we’ll do an update post to see how everyone is coming along
-
10/31 – we’ll post a recap of the read-a-long with links to each participants review

Why Read About Monsters?
If you’ve ever thought about reading either (or both) books, now’s the time. Reading about monsters is always safer when you’re amongst friends. And rumor has it they’re spooktacular, oops, I mean spectacular, reads. Please join us…it’ll be fun! Plus, you can post one of the nifty buttons that Heather made on your blog!
Sign Up Now
There’s no official sign up for this read-a-long, just leave a comment letting us know to include you and which book you’ll be reading. Then be sure to check in either here or at Age 30+ … A Lifetime of Books for the update and recap posts. And feel free to use either of the buttons above on you blog!
*Garlic, stakes and crosses not included.

Also, a big thank you to Heather for taking the lead on this and getting our read-a-long off the ground! She rocks!

What a great idea for a challenge! I haven’t read either book, but would love too. I actually own both, so really I have no excuse! I’m not going to commit to anything at the moment, but I’ll try to read at least one of them.
Dracula is turning out to be a surprisingly quick read…if that helps.
We’d love to have you join in!
I’ve never read Dracula, so I think this would be a good challenge. I’ve just requested 2 copies from the library-one an 1897 edition and one 2005 edition. I’m curious to see if there are any major differences.

I’m reading the new annotated version, which is weird, as the annotations mostly focus on proving/disproving the story…it assumes Stoker is using primary sources.
This is such a spooktacular idea! I’ve been wanting to re-read Frankenstein for years now, so I think I’ll jump on board and read it now

Wahoo!
I read Frankenstein in September, so I’ll be joining in on discussions of that one. (It’s one of my favorites.) And I’m excited to be rereading Dracula. So definitely count me in on that one, please!

Excellent! Welcome to the read-a-long!
I was already planning on reading “Frankenstein” for the RIP IV challenge, so I’m on the “other side”! This looks like fun, and if you do it again next year, I’ll read “Dracula”. Unless you pick different monsters next year
.
Yay! And I’m on the other side, too. Well, both sides, actually. Just don’t tell Dracula I’m cheating on him.
This will be so much fun! Thanks for dueling with me!

I’ve been wanting to read Dracula, it’s sitting on my shelf, and your button is so cute! So yes, I’m joining! I don’t know if I can finish it in a month as I’m already in the middle of a few books, but I’ll die trying.
ps: Are you reading ‘Reading Like a Writer’ too? Cos I am, albeit slowly.

Ahhhh–for the crazy people like me you need to post about this wayyyyyyyyyyyy ahead of time. Wait, maybe you did that and in a fit of panic I had to mark everything read in my reader? Anyway, I love this idea and I’ve been wanting to read Dracula for ages. Just.Can’t.Commit.This.Month.

Oooh! I would love to do this but have too many challenges to finish. It is a great idea!

I want to do this but I’m worried I won’t finish in time. I suspect it will take longer to read than most books. So I’m sorta in…does that count?

I’ve read both books, but I think your read-a-long is terribly clever. My post here: http://melydia.zoiks.org/2009/10/dueling-monsters-read-a-long/

I am attempting to read Dracula for the RIP Challenge. Not sure if I am going to finish in time because of a heavy review schedule this month.
I look forward to following the discussion. I read Frankenstein in high school.
