TSS: Burgers and Franks

TSSbadge11 TSS: Burgers and Franks

After a week filled with bizarre weather (two days of torrential downpours, followed by two days of extreme heat and humidity), we’ve settled back into our normal foggy weather.  It’s the perfect day for hanging out, watching football, reading and blogging.

Just to illustrate how totally oblivious Hamburger is to my bookish world, I give you this conversation that we just had:

HB: Hey, have you seen this? It’s some kind of book that holds books.

SD: (looks up at tv, which is playing something about the Sony e-Reader) Yeah, that’s the Sony e-Reader.  Amazon has one, too, called the Kindle. (I rambled on about how they work, and I’m pretty sure he was thinking Christmas present, until I complained about the fact that the screens are grey-scale, not color. And then I said…) They cost about $300.

HB: Whoa.

Yeah, so I’m guessing I’ll continue to get gift cards.

This week I read Frankenstein, for the Dueling Monsters Read-a-long that Heather and I are hosting. I loathed Frankenstein (the scientist, not the monster). Dracula definitely came out ahead in that duel. Look for my thoughts on both books in the next few weeks.

I also read Tell Me Something True, which was a wonderfully quick read about Gabriella, and her quest to understand her mother, who died when she was young.  The novel is set in both Cali, Columbia and L.A.

Today, I’m alternating between Say Everything, a book about blogging that I saw on Kim’s blog, and Hemingway’s A Moveable Feast, which I’m enjoying the heck out of.  I’m pretty sure I’ve read a Hemingway story at some point, although I can’t say for sure. But I’m absolutely in love with A Moveable Feast, both for the writing ( Hemingway is the anti-Rushdie.  Or rather Rushdie is the anti-Hemingway. And I adore him for his beautifully SHORT sentences.) and for the setting (Paris).

I am still behind on reviews. I said I was last week, and that certainly hasn’t changed in the past week. My goal for today is to type up some book thoughts and do a little prep for my cheerleading gig next weekend. And no, Billy hasn’t read any books lately. But he’s been making noises about wanting to read Life as We Knew It.

  1. I wish I’d gotten some of that rain. I think it drizzled one night, but that’s about it.

Ever since I mentioned to my husband that I’ve been considering the Sony Reader (no time soon, just some day in the far off future), I’ve noticed he’s been reading up on them. I don’t expect him to get me one, especially not with those prices and my needing a new laptop.

I am so glad you are enjoying reading Hemingway. I haven’t read the story you mention, but I’ve read several of his books in the past and enjoyed them.

I hope you have a great week, Jill!

We’ve had serious squalls for the last three days. Just preparing for our PNW winter, I guess. I am excited about the read-a-thon. Have fun cheer-leading!

Hey–you can’t go wrong with gift cards. I try to drop that hint anywhere I can and always get the response, “do you really want more books?” YES!!! :)

A Moveable Feast is an interesting one, huh? I don’t particularly care for Heminway but I enjoy his books and stories (mostly). AMF really fascinated me, though.

We had the rain but I wouldn’t call it a downpour. It was a steady rain and sort of nice. Then the heat hit but it was a super dry heat. No humidity for us but windy as hell.

My husband asked me last night if I wanted a Kindle for Christmas. I am torn between that and a really nice leather club chair which would be my reading chair. I am leaning toward the chair as I really don’t think I could read a book via an electronic device.

Mr. BFR calls my Sony eReader “that book thing”, as in: Are you reading that book thing?

    Gift cards are great.

  9. I hated Frankenstein the scientist in that book. He’s whiny, and irresponsible, and kine of a jerk. I think he was supposed to be sympathetic, but I was always sort of happy when bad things happened to him :)

Well, I think the Kindles are down to $259 now. And if you save all the gift cards, they might eventually buy you one!!
