top 10 Top 10 Book List (Weekly Geeks 2009 43)

Last week for Weekly Geeks Jackieinvited people to share their 10 favorite books published in 2009. The end result will be a list of what book bloggers consider to be the best books of 2009.  Please see the original Weekly Geeks post for complete details (and feel free to join in…the more the merrier!).

Evidently, I don’t read a whole lot of books in the year they are published. But I did read some, and what follows (in no particular order) are my favorites:

The Help, Kathryn Stockett (contemporary literature)

Precious, Sandra Novack (contemporary literature)

Through Black Spruce, Joseph Boyden (contemporary literature)

Little Bee, Chris Cleave (contemporary literature)

Into the Beautiful North, Luis Alberto Urrea (contemporary literature)

The Calligrapher’s Daughter, Eugenia Kim (historical fiction)

Baking Cakes in Kigali, Gaile Parkin (contemporary literature)

True Pleasures, Lucinda Holdforth (non-fiction)

When Everything Changed, Gail Collins (non-fiction)

  1. How come Kristin Lav is not on your list?!! :–)

  2. Little Bee will be in my top 10 for the year, but it was published here in 2008, so I haven’t included it in my best of 2009 list.

The Help also made my list.

I’m planning to read Precious and The Calligrapher’s Daughter at some point. Great list – I’ll have to consider picking up the others.

This date thing is confusing… I had Black Spruce as pub’d in 2008 otherwise it would have made my list, too. I love these lists!

I liked but didn’t love Into the Beautiful North. And I’m last person on earth who still hasn’t read The Help.

Gee, I’ve only read one of those, but I have 5 more in my TBR pile. Somehow I don’t think I’ll get them read before the year’s out.

  7. I’ve only read one of the books on your list (Precious–and I thought it was very good too) and several others are books I hope to eventually read. There have been so many great books published just this year alone! Thanks for sharing your list with us.

  8. Florinda says:

I just finished The Help, but I did it in time to put it on my list :-) . When Everything Changed is on my Kindle, and I plan to read it for Women Unbound – I’m definitely going to exceed my pledge if I read everything I’ve planned for that challenge! Precious is on my wish list – I saw so many great reviews of it.
