‘Twas the Night Before Christmas

‘Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the intranets

Not a blogger was typing, not even their pets;

The bookshelves were tidy with space made here and there,

In hopes that new books would soon make it un-bare;

ChrisKris(tina) and Chris were nestled all snug in their beds,

While visions of Nooks danced in their heads;

Although Dawn in her go-go boots, and Care with a pie,

Had just set off for a book store nearby,

When on Twitter there arose such a chatter,

I had to put my book down to read all the blather.

Away to Tweetdeck I flew like a flash,

Logged in right quick and a tweet I did dash.

It seems that the book bloggers were all a-flutter;

Santa had been sighted in Jennifer’s gutter!

And then, as we tweeted amongst ourselves,

There appeared a ginormous sleigh, full of bookshelves,

With a jolly driver, so lively and quick,

I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.

Quick as a flash, the bloggers they tweeted,

And Santa whistled and shouted, their names he bleated;

“Now, Death and Baby Death! now, Eva and Emily!

Hey, Lisa! hey Louise! hey Wendy and Stephanie!

To your netbooks! to your Macs!

Now blog away! blog away! Blog the facts:

Yes, it’s true, Santa is real, and he comes bearing books,

There is no need to give that wine glass a few second looks,

He’s knows what you’ve been reading,

He’s knows if you’ve been bad or good, and about all the pleading.”

Then quick as a flash, I saw in my Reader hundreds of posts

That proclaimed Santa is more than just a boast.

As I scrolled through the posts, my head turned around,

And down the chimney Santa came with a bound.

I’m not really sure how; there’s no fireplace in our house.

Then Santa said “Howdy! I’ve just come from Laos.”

A bundle of books he had flung on his back,

We traded, the books for his snack.

The books — how they beckoned! The covers so glossy!

And look, this one appears to be written by an Aussie!

There was The Count of Monte Cristo, what a classic,

Despite what I used to think, old authors aren’t Jurassic;

The latest New Yorker was part of the loot,

But I had to wipe off a wee smudge of soot;

There was the turquoise beauty of The Lacuna,

So I can decide if I still loathe Kingsolver as I do tuna.

He’d included Greer and Friedan, for a feminist binge,

Because Santa knew I had joined the Women Unbound Challenge.

But bestest of all was the shiny new Nook,

I was ready to settle down with its instruction book!

By this time Santa had finished his snack,

And I had all my new books piled in a stack.

So I said, “Thanks!” and Santa replied “Toodle-loo,”

And he hopped in his sleigh and off he flew;

He left behind an extremely happy reader,

And a few cookie crumbs under the cedar.

Then I heard him proclaim, ere he drove out of sight,

“Happy Holidays to all, and to all a bookish night.”
