This is a beautiful book in a number of ways…the story, the characterization and the friendship between the two characters (who are almost the only two characters in the book).

Veronika is a young writer. She rents a house in a remote Swedish village to work on her next book. Although her cottage is next to another home, Veronika wonders if it’s even inhabited, as it’s rundown and dark.

Astrid is an old woman, seemingly content with her hermit-like existence and her reputation as the local witch. But her new neighbor slowly draws her out of her self-imposed isolation.

As these two very different women begin to share walks and meals, a close friendship develops. They become close confidents, divulging painful secrets and losses. And they both begin to heal.

The joy in this book is watching the unfolding of the story, the characters and their relationship. Two women, separated by age, circumstance and experience, still manage to find common ground and comfort in each other.
