Hi everyone! It’s Billy again. Remember me? The little goat who likes to read? Millie’s friend? Billy just wanted to pop in and wish you all a Happy New Year and share with you all the last book that Billy read (and Billy’s not really sure why Billy likes to refer to Billy’s self in the third person, but humor Billy).
Even though it’s the year of the tiger (at least that’s what Google says), Billy just finished a book called The Year of the Goat. Billy thinks it should ALWAYS be the year of the goat.
Softdrink is (edited to add: was) still reading that Melville book that Billy is boycotting. So Billy went rummaging through the bookcases in search of something better. And what could be better than goats?!? (Well, milkshakes. Billy looooooooooooooooves milkshakes. But that’s another story.)
So Billy found this book. It’s about two humans who live in NYC with their dog (Millie, you might like this one, too). They’re not very happy, so they quit their jobs and spend the next year travelling around the US researching goats. Seriously. Is that not the awesomest?!?
They do lots of research on goat cheese and dairies. And breeding goats (Billy’s too young to really understand that part). And even raising goats for meat (those parts hurt Billy’s feelings, but Billy does know that it happens. But Billy is a vegetarian…and Billy’d like to urge you all to consider reading Jonathan Safran Foer’s new book, Eating Animals…Billy’s gonna order it for Softdrink as soon as Billy finds her credit card…it’s gotta be around here somewhere).
So anyways, back to the humans. They do all this research ‘cause they’re thinking of starting their own goat farm. And at the very end of the book, they do buy a farm. And a few goats – but not for nefarious purposes, because they really love goats. And what’s not to love?
So Billy really liked this book (well, except for those parts). Maybe Billy will order you all a copy when Billy finds that credit card.

That goat on the cover is really cute!

Billy, this sounds like a wonderful book! I can’t wait to read it. Also, you’ve inspired Millie to take a trip to the bookstore (or at least to the interwebs) to find a book about dogs. And it has to be one in which the dog doesn’t die. Because that makes Millie sad, and basset hounds already look sad enough. Keep up the great reading!

To my knowledge – and as hard as this is to imagine – I think this is the first review of the book by a goat. How is that possible? I don’t know.
Billy, you’re the best. Thanks for reading.
