Since I’m hosting a mini-challenge, I though it would be bad form to not participate. However, I’ve waited until just about the last minute to post my own NY list for the February mini-challenge.
I will be in NYC from 5/22-5/30. While BEA was the inspiration for the trip, I am staying the entire week so that I can spend some quality tourist time with the city. And I’ll be traveling with my usual travel partner, my mom. If you knew Hamburger you’d laugh yourself silly over the thought of him in NY…he hates sightseeing and doing just about anything on vacation. So since my mom will be with me, the trip will not be entirely about books. Here are 10 things I would like to do, though:
- Ellis Island – this is at the top of both my list and my mom’s, actually. While we’ve both been to the Statue of Liberty, neither of us has visited Ellis Island…we’re looking forward to it.
- The Strand – okay, I can’t help myself, I have to put a bookstore (or two) on the list.
- Idlewild Books – Even if I have to drag my mom kicking and screaming, I’ll be stopping by. This bookstore features world literature organized by country. I may never want to come out.
- a Broadway show – we haven’t decided which one yet, but we will be going.
- the subway – I think mom’s a little scared, but I love mass transit. Even when I get on a train going in the wrong direction. It’s all part of the adventure.
- Brooklyn – I’ve been to NY three times, but have never made it out of Manhattan. This trip I’d like to explore another borough. Maybe Brooklyn?
- The Cloisters – the name alone makes me want to visit.
- Ground Zero – this is a possibility. I’ve been to a concentration camp, so I’m not afraid to depress myself on vacation.
- Times Square – since our hotel is on (in?) Times Square, this one is pretty much a no-brainer.
- ???? Give me some suggestions!

The Metropolitan Museum of Art! Of course, you’ve probably already been there. I’ll be close to Times Square too, so I’m wondering where you’re staying.
I’d like to visit the Cloisters, too … and the bookstores, you know they’re on my list.

I’d love to go to New York, but like you, I would have to find another travel partner besides my living partner, who would hate hate hate doing anything on a trip except playing sports (which he could do anywhere, needless to add).

Great list! Ellis Island is at the top of my list too since we didn’t get to go there on my last trip. I’ll probably be visiting my friend in queens so I’ll get to see that borough but I would really live to see Brooklyn too!

The Cloisters sound great! I’ve wanted to go to Ellis Island too. Bookstores and restaurants… Yay!

All these places sound utterly fantastic. I hope to one day visit them myself.

First, let me say I’ve been to ground zero and there really isn’t anything to see. They have these really high fences around the whole thing with plastic covering them so you can only see in through tiny slits people have surrupticiously made. There’s also nothing to do in that area. I was really disappointed when I went.
Second, I’m going to be in NYC from the 23rd to the 30th and would love to explore Brooklyn with you if I end up having time!
Third, I suggest going to St. Patricks Cathedral. It’s awesome.
The New York Public Library and Bryant Park (just behind it). I agree with Amanda, not a lot at Ground Zero (at least a couple years ago). How about Central Park (we actually did a horse carriage ride).

Cool that you are going to New York City. Never been and I grew up in Massachusetts! I have always wanted to go to Ellis Island. Don’t know of many other places to recommend that are either not on your list or suggested by others already, but make sure to enjoy the pizza. I also have read that there is a GROM there. Amazing gelato – especially the caffe and pistacchio if you like those flavors. Can’t wait to hear about your trip

Nice list! Sounds like you’ll be very happily busy on your trip!
I was actually going to say the same thing Amanda wrote above: currently, Ground Zero is completely fenced off and under construction. I do think it’s important to see if you’re in New York, but you shouldn’t expect an unfettered view or easy access.
Hmm, what else…if the weather’s nice/you and your mother enjoy parks, I’d suggest Inwood Park (though it’s a fair trip by subway)! The Central Park Zoo is a cute and fun way to spend time, too. Or maybe a trip up to the viewing platform at 30 Rock for a view of the Manhattan skyline?
Okay, this is getting long, haha. Have a great time!!
You MUST get a cupcake from Crumbs Bake Shop. Trust me on this!

Hopefully it will be nice enough to just enjoyable roam Central Park, because that’s what I always bring people to do when they visit.
To get your Brooklyn visit in, walk across the Brooklyn Bridge and grab pizza at Grimaldi’s under the bridge.
Yayyy Idlewild! I’m there all the time.
I think some BEA week activities should be planned for outside of BEA. I think there are enough people that live here that can plan some exciting things for visitors!
