An un-romantic Valentine’s Sunday Salon

Happy Valentine’s Day! If that’s your thing. If not, well, happy Sunday!

Today is the day Hamburger and I choose to celebrate our anniversary, because we’re both lame and have no idea when our actual anniversary is. We’ve been together for 18 years, so I’d say our lack of a true anniversary hasn’t hurt us. And no, we’re not doing anything. We’re pretty low-key, and Hamburger is actually working, taking advantage of the clear weather to set up for a concrete pour later this week. He’s working all weekend, which means I have a four day weekend all too myself. It’s pretty sweet. And there you have it…proof of how un-romantic I really am.

After I spent most of January flying through the books, I’ve slowed down considerably for February. Which is nice…it means I’m still (almost) caught up on my reviews. This week I posted reviews for Daddy Long-Legs, Vanishing America, and The Swan Thieves. I also posted about the Neil Gaiman talk I attended, as well as an interview with Cthulhu (who, by the way, is a character from H.P. Lovecraft’s stories, and the representative of all that is evil). Which seemed to worry some of you…it’s okay, really, I’ve always been weird, it’s just sometimes I do a better job of hiding it. icon biggrin An un romantic Valentines Sunday Salon

Speaking of weird, I’m currently reading House of Leaves with Rebecca and Jenn. This is possibly the weirdest book I’ve ever read. Not so much in content, but in design and intent. And while the content is weird, I’ve certainly read weirder (Geek Love, anyone?). But the premise is just bizarre.  It’s like The Blair Witch Project meets post-modernism, with some Chip Kidd design tossed in for fun. And the footnotes! Holy crap, the footnotes are longer than the actual text…in fact, they’re a whole ‘nother story. Or two. Or three. Has anyone ever read this book? I’ve already resorted to Googling it, just to have a better understanding of its intent.

I’m also planning to start Catcher in the Rye soon, for another read-along, this one hosted by Melissa.

So after I go for a walk, I’ll be hibernating with my books for the rest of the day. How about you? Any fun plans, bookish or otherwise?

  1. Happy Valentine’s Day AND Happy Anniversary! We have a very romantic day planned: after Jim gets back from tennis we’re going rock hunting, which is necessary to do before the snakes wake up. I will also be continuing to look up Spanish curse words on the computer as I am reading a book which has them aplenty. For dinner we were thinking of having Chinese food in honor of the Chinese New Year, but are debating whether everyone else in town would have that same idea. And reviews. Must write reviews. ….

GREAT cartoon! Hub and I are perfectly happy to do our own thing today – I’m reading and blogging in my very own room upstairs and he’s in the basement getting ready to watch the Daytona 500. He did cook me breakfast and we took a nice (brrrrr cold and windy) walk of nearly a half mile. Love is Grand. Happy Valentines Day! love, Care

Happy Valentine’s Day to you! We don’t go all out for Valentine’s Day either – the last thing I want to do is go out to eat today! No big plans around here – just relaxing.

Happy Valentines day and happy anniversary. I hope you have a nice four day weekend.
My reading has slowed down too this month. I think I went into overdrive in January.

I got a snuggie for Valentine’s Day, so that’s pretty exciting. I need to test it out with some books.

Happy Anniversary! Valentine’s Day seems like a good day to celebrate it… even in a low-key kind of way :-)
An on-line group I’m in read House of Leaves a few years ago, but I didn’t read along. It just sounded too weird for me.

I have slowed down reading in February a lot, too. Not sure why, but maybe it’s just the ebb and flow of things.

I like low-key celebrations. Right with you on that!

Z and I don’t know our real anniversary either! After we’d been dating ~1 year, we realized that we had no idea when to celebrate. So we picked a date and that’s the date we’ve used ever since.

  10. My fiance and I aren’t very romantic either. We made sure to get his daughter something special for the holiday, but as for the two of us, we just planned on going out for dinner tomorrow with friends.

  11. Jenny says:

I got House of Leaves for Christmas – and it is completely disorienting and crazy. I had far less trouble with the weirdest-looking pages, and far more when the footnotes started getting all descent-into-madness-y. But it was worth the effort, in the end!

I’ve never seen Valentine’s Day as a big deal, even when I was with someone. So, I totally get it. Hope you enjoyed your reading day!

Happy Anniversary whenever. That is okay, my husbands wedding band has the wrong date in it by 5 months LOL (we changed the date).

I have not heard of House of Leaves; I ‘m curious now and have to check it out.

    Have a great week.

I think it is great that you chose to claim Valentine’s Day for your anniversary. And 18 years of being together is proof you don’t need romance to keep a romance alive!

  15. Ti says:

It’s been utterly un-romantic here as well. We got into a little spat early on about how this isn’t a REAL holiday and what’s the big deal and all of that. Personally, it’s not a big deal to me either but it instantly becomes a big deal when someone is telling me it’s not a big deal.

Since I was sort of in a sulky mood, I spent the day in my room reading. Which was actually quite lovely so I have no complaints.

  16. Happy Anniversary! I love days alone too. I have a 10 day stretch coming up when my hubby goes to Honduras on Thursday. To me that means no cooking, full TV rights, and reading as much as I want!

Late wishes for a Happy Anniversary. I’ve never seen the big deal about Valentines even when I was in a relationship -it’s so commercialized now. It should be about the everyday, not just one day. I hope you enjoyed your reading. I didn’t get a lot done this past weekend but I hope to catch up on my reading this week.

House of Leaves!!!! I read it in college and loved the challenge of it. I don’t know how (or if) I would appreciate it now, but then it was awesome. I have his other book, Only Revolutions, and it’s weird turned up to 11. Way weirder than House of Leaves if you can believe that. Pick up and copy and flip through…you’ll see what I mean!
