Sunday Salon: an un-rainy rainy day

TSSbadge11 Sunday Salon: an un rainy rainy day

We were supposed to have a rainy day. So far, all it’s done is spit a little bit. However, I haven’t let that stop me from holing up inside with some books! We’re currently waiting for the pizza to be delivered, so it will truly be a lazy day.

This morning I read All the Living, which was a beautifully told story that never really engaged me. I mean, I read it, and I appreciated it, but I never felt much for the characters. I also couldn’t figure out when it was set. For some reason, this really bothers me in a book…I have a need to know the time period! It felt like the early 1900s, but it was probably more like the 1970s or 1980s. It could’ve even been the present, who knows.

After I finished that one, I moved on to The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. I’m 97 pages into it, and despite the science, it’s fascinating. And heartbreaking. If you haven’t heard of this one yet, head on over to Linus’s Blanket and read what Nicole had to say by way of introduction. I’m guessing by the time I’m done this will be one of those books about which I say “you gotta read this!”

Things have been a bit quiet on the ol’ blog this week. I posted one review (for a book I didn’t even like all that much), and nothing else. I have a bunch of book thoughts I do need to write, though, so I figure it’s some sort of cosmic payback for last week’s comment about being relatively caught up. I just haven’t felt very wordy this week. Hopefully, I’ll snap out of it before the backlog becomes overwhelming. And I know, nowhere does it say I have to blog about every book. But um, yeah, I do. At this point, it would feel really, really wrong if I skipped over a few.

I think I hear the pizza dude! Later, gators.

  1. I bought Henrietta Lacks last week, but probably won’t get to it until my book club reads it in May. I can’t wait to see what you think of it.

  2. I started The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks this weekend too — I’m reading it for one of my classes this semester, and get to meet the author when she speaks to us in a few weeks! I just finished the first section and I like it a lot so far.

I have a feeling my blog’s going to be pretty quiet next week…

I like books that can take place in any time. Having it set down generally bothers me.

I feel the same way. If I read it, it gets reviewed. And I also feel the same about a book’s time period. Because it could change the whole story. That would make me crazy trying to figure it out. Enjoy your pizza! :)

I’m so looking forward to the Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, Glad you are into it.

I have The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks but haven’t picked it up yet despite the fact that I’m supposed to be reading it (now) with a friend. Ack! Okay. I’ll definitely add it to my TBR pile for this week. Happy reading.

Sometimes, we just are not that chatty, which is perfectly okay because I know that we will make up for it another week. I know what you mean about needing to review every book. You’ll get it all done when you feel like it. I have no doubt about that! I hope you enjoy your pizza!

  9. I like to know settings in books too. Not knowing ages bugs me too. If I am reading a YA I like to know where we are at in the age spectrum….. are they 16? 18? 20′s?

Hope you read a wonderful book this week!

  10. Don’t you hate it when you’re promised a nice rainy Sunday and it just doesn’t come through? I do love a rainy Sunday.

Henrietta is on the TBR pile, and I can’t wait to read her this week. It looks amazing!

  11. I broke #blob to get HENRIETTA LACKS! Rebecca Skloot was signing in Cambridge, and I had planned to go, but it turned out to be the day of our big “red alert snowstorm that didn’t happen, but the kids will be home from school anyway!” … sigh … I didn’t make it in, but a friend picked up a signed copy for me. Worth the #blob points; it’s an amazing story, which Skloot pursued doggedly.

and … (sigh, again) … no one delivers pizza here in our little burb. I’ve taken to making my own (with store-bought dough, I don’t go all Becky-Home Ecky!)

We had a little rain, but not much. We also had pizza. I spent much of the day reading and loved it.

I’m also bothered when I don’t know when a historical novel is set. Also I like to know where, exactly, it’s set, even it’s not somewhere I’ve been.

I had the same kind of ho hum, don’t feel like writing really week. I think I depressed myself with the posts I did write.

I feel your pain! Yesterday it was supposed to pour – we were under severe hailstorm warning (or watch; whichever one is less scary) – so I went to bed early and snuggled up in my bed with several books, and it rained for about five minutes and then went off. Stupid weather forecasters.

I had it on hold at my library and it came in while I was in Hawaii. And went on to the next person before we got home. Booo. Now I’m 4th on the list (v small library!)
