If you’re new in these here parts, you might not know that I have a habit of co-opting songs and changing the lyrics. I already have a song ready for the read-a-thon, but I was driving home the other day and this song came on the radio. I loathe the lyrics, and all I could think about was how much better the song would be if they were singing about books. I’m much happier with this version…
Books
Books – all I really want is books
And in the morning it’s books
Cause in the evening it’s books
I like the way that they read
I swear when I leave town they breed
Books are really all I need
Oh how I love them, yes indeed
“Just read” is my creed
And “one more page” I always plead
“Sssshhh, I’m reading” – you should take heed
For I’ll let nothing intercede
Cause all I want to do is read
When the book’s good I read full speed
If it is not I will concede
Pick up another and proceed
I’ve been known to call in sick just so I can read
I practice my cough to mislead
Stay home and read should be decreed
That’s one rule I’d always heed
I need a new book, guaranteed
To the bookstore I will proceed
I think we’re all agreed
When it comes to books there’s no such thing as greed
Books – to entertain me
Books – to make me happy
Books – to make me daydream
Books – any time of day
Books – that’s all I really want is books
Two at a time – I want books
With shiny covers – I want books
I’m gonna read my – books, books, books, books, books!

And now that I’ve got you all bopping your head and singing a song, you should think about signing up to be a cheerleader for the April 10th read-a-thon. It’s great fun! And while you don’t have to compose entire songs, we certainly won’t stop you if you feel inspired.

I’d never heard “that” song before, so I had to listen to it. Your version is so much better! I hope you’ll sing to us all in New York!
Oh, Jill. What’s there to say besides YOU ARE AWESOME! I love it.

Love it, love it, love it. I have to dust off my cheerleader outfit and dig out my saddle shoes (what cheerleaders wore in my day).
Guess what tune will be floating around my head today?

I missed these. I am not a big fan of the Beastie Boys so your rendition is much appreciated.

I couldn’t remember the song so I had it playing in the background as I read your lyrics. You’re so talented, Jill!
