For my BFF, the FTC: I bought this one. Unfortunately, I don’t have the receipt, so you’ll just have to take my word for it.

From the back of the book:

Told in a series of vignettes stunning for their eloquence, The House on Mango Street is Sandra Cisneros’s greatly admired novel of a young girl frowing up in the Latino section of Chicago. Acclaimed by critics, beloved by children, their parents and grandparents, taught everywhere from inner-city grade schools to universities across the country, and translated all over the world, it has entered the canon of coming-of-age classics.

Sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes deeply joyous, The House on Mango Street tells the story of Esperanza Cordero, whose neighborhood is one of harsh realities and harsh beauty. Esperanza doesn’t want to belong – not to her rundown neighborhood, and not to the low expectations the world has for her. Esperanza’s story is that of a young girl coming into her power, and inventing for herself what she will become.

And that says it all. And since I agree with it all, I have nothing more to say.

  1. Ha, Jill, your review made me laugh from its beginning (and the message to the FTC) to its end! Brilliant.

I purchased Caramelo recently and can’t wait to read it and The House on Mango Street, both.

I really wish I could have loved this one, but alas I’m again the lone hate-this-wretched-book voice. :/

  5. I really can relate. Sometimes the back of the book says it so well it’s impossible to add or change anything. And don’t you just hate that? How do these back-of-the-book writers do it so well and so easily?!!!

No excuse for not getting around to reading this short book. Must do it soon.

I think I maybe read this in high school, or at least excerpts from it. And now I don’t remember hardly anything about it….looks like it’s time for a reread!

I hadn’t realised this was so short! I’m saying this because between your post and a friend’s recommendation recently, I’m dying to read it. And I seem to have convinced myself that I’m not *really* breaking my ban if I get a short book :P

I plucked it off the shelf because I’ve been having trouble finishing anything. And it was short, so I figured it was a good bet. It wasn’t what I expected, either.

I loved this book. It’s small size is really deceptive considering how many big ideas it holds. I’m hosting a giveaway of it if anyone’s interested. BTW, I’m new to this blog and enjoying it.
