Mercy Thompson Series

I have, on occasion, called Other Jill a series whore. Well, now it’s her turn to return the favor.

A few weeks ago, on a Monday, I downloaded Patricia Brigg’s Moon Called. I was feeling lazy, and wanted something entertaining to read. I figured an urban fantasy with shape shifters, werewolves, fey and vampires (hey, don’t judge…at least they don’t sparkle) was just the ticket. Mercy Thompson, the heroine of the story, is a shape shifting coyote, and she has the ability to kick some serious ass. It was a good story (I especially liked the alternate reality, which is our reality with a lot of fey and a few werewolves and vamps tossed in), and Mercy is edgy enough that I wanted to keep reading. The only thing that bugs me is Mercy’s tattoos. Not the fact that she is tattooed, but the fact that the cover images aren’t consistent. Not with her description of her tattoos, or even from cover to cover. She’s a shape shifter, not a tattoo shifter.

Anyways. Despite that little problemo, by Friday of that same week I had read the entire series. All 5 of them, which means I read a book a day. It helped that it was a short work week for me (8 hour days, instead of 10), and that the books are quick reads. Although I might’ve stayed up a wee bit later than I should have to finish some of the books.

Now I’m waiting for the 6th book to be published (it comes out in March), and I’ve returned to the more serious stuff on the shelf.

Have you ever plowed through an entire series in one week, only to be left twiddling your thumbs while you wait for the next book to come out?

I’m addicted to series, and waiting for the next installment is so horribly painful. The most obnoxious I’ve ever been was with Suzanne Collins Underland Chronicles. I read the first four in two days, and then practically walked over people to go buy the fifth.

Okay, so what is about this series lately? On New Year’s Eve a friend gave me the first in this series (I haven’t opened it yet) and said I’d love it. Then a few days later I see someone else raving abotu it. Now you are …. I know when I’ve been beaten. Okay, I’m going to read it.

If Harry Potter counts, then yes, I’ve done this. I didn’t pick up Harry Potter until after Book 6 came out, so I read the first six all in a row. Of course, the books were too long to read them each in one day, and while I was in the middle of the fifth book my brother and sister flew into town to visit so I was sneaking into the bathroom to swallow quick chapters whenever I could, and then once I was done I had no way to get ahold of the sixth book for a few weeks…but yeah. I know the feeling. :D

Yeah, I barreled through the Harry Potter books after the fifth book came out. I adore the Mercy Thompson Series, but started reading them only after the second book was published, so the whole zooming sequentially through each book in the series was not an option.

Oh my, Jill you must have loved these! The only series I have ever done this with is The Outlander series, but I only got to the fifth book, and then I hit overload. I hesitate reading books in a series for this very reason, and hate to have to wait for the author to catch up with me! Great post, and I am so glad to hear that you are such a big fan of these books!

Love, love, love Mercy Thompson and can’t wait for the new book. I would rather read a series than standalone books. I fall in love with the characters and never want the stories to end. I enjoy J.D. Robb’s In Death series and remember rereading part of the series over a few days when a new book came out. Don’t do that anymore since there are now over 25 books in the series.

You sound more like a series junkie instead of a series whore! That could cause some serious overdosing!

The only series I have ever nom’d on were LJ Smith’s. Any of her books.

Much as I adore coyotes, I’m a little hesitant to try urban fantasy. I think it’s all the trashy covers that all look exactly alike.

I just read some criticism about this particular series on a popular feminist blog I like. The issue was that Mercy Thompson’s Native American heritage only exists to make her “exotic” and be the source of her powers. Other than that, the blogger argued, she’s basically white-identified, like Anita Blake (half-Mexican), which is pretty problematic given the lack of racial diversity in urban fantasy as a whole (except for the L.A. Banks books). What do you think?

  10. I don’t think I’ve ever done an entire series that fast, but I did re-read both of the Hunger Games books before Mockingjay came out. I think it took more than a week to read all three of them, I can’t remember. I do remember that my brain was mush by the time I finished!

Wow! No I have never read a series that fast! I just don’t think I read that fast. The fastest I think I ever read a series was the Outlander series which I devoured in a month (6 or 7 books at around 900pg each – pretty good!).

I love this series! I read the first 5 or 6 Anita Blake (Laurell K Hamilton) books that quick, but have now given up on the series altogether.

These books kind of sound similar to the Sookie Stackhouse books (I’m sure they are completely different!), but I’m so adding this series to my wishlist. It sounds pretty awesome. lol YaY ‘at least they don’t sparkle.’ I would love to read more books actually on shape shifters. ;) They’ve become a new favorite of mine.

  14. Sia says:

The only series for me is the Twilight series. I just adore those books !

  15. Darlene says:

I haven’t managed to plow through a series in a week – that’s pretty good but I did RA e through the first 4 or 5 books in the Anita Blake series when I started reading them.

I’ve been debating on reading Moon Called. I think I’m just going to go ahead and download now. Lol.
