Who Wears Short Shorts?

indie lit awards banner Who Wears Short Shorts?

Okay, the title has nothing to do with the post, but the short lists are out for the Indie Lit Awards, and now I have that song running through my head. This is a hereditary affliction…I have vivid memories of my mom singing “She wore bluuuuuuuuuuuue vellllllll-vet” whenever the word velvet was mentioned.

Anyhoosie. Here are the short shorts lists:

2010 Shortlist for GLBTQ

  • Annabel by Kathleen Winter
  • Jumpstart the World by Catherine Ryan Hyde
  • Krakow Melt by Daniel Allen Cox
  • Will Grayson, Will Grayson by David Levithan and John Green
  • Scars by Cheryl Rainfield

2010 Short List for Literary Fiction

  • C by Tom McCarthy
  • Great House by Nicole Krauss
  • Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand by Helen Simonson
  • Room by Emma Donoghue
  • Safe from the Sea by Peter Geye

2010 Short List for Non-Fiction

  • The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot
  • The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson
  • Let’s Take the Long Way Home by Gail Caldwell
  • Cleopatra: A Life by Stacy Schiff
  • At Home by Bill Bryson

2010 Shortlist for Speculative Fiction

  • Monsters of Men by Patrick Ness
  • Kraken by China Mieville
  • Dante’s Journey by JC Marino
  • How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe by Charles Yu
  • The Passage by Justin Cronin

I’m currently reading my way through the Literary Fiction nominees, since I’m on the judging panel. But I’m going to remain mum on my thoughts. For now. I will say, though, that the non-fiction list is looking mighty appealing. I might just have to part with some of my valuable Christmas gift card and buy Cleopatra.

These are some good looking lists. The literary fiction list looks like it woud be a tough category to make a decision on.

  2. That’s quite a diverse list! I think it’d be hard to be a judge on any of those panels. Hopefully Crime Fiction will have its own category next time around.

We definitely have a great minds think alike situation here. I posted about the Indie Lit Awards too! I’ve already started drooling over some of the books on the short lists. As for Cleopatra, do you want to borrow my copy? Or is this one you would want to own? I haven’t read it yet, but I doubt I am going to get to it anytime in the next couple months, so I would have no problem sending it on to you for a borrow. Let me know!

I’m on the non-fiction panel, and I can definitely understand why that list appeals to you – some great stuff! :-)

I’ve read two on the Lit Fiction list and have a third on my TBR pile but the others will have to wait until after the TBR Dare. You’ve got a hard choice there!

Don’t worry, it’s not just you. It’s an affliction that has long run through my family as well. The most innocent word can set the whole family to howling song lyrics. Anyone who claims that people don’t randomly burst into song in real life like they do in musicals has obviously never been to my house…

  12. Erin says:

I completely understand the music thing. My mom used to sing pretty much every four-syllable sentence or phrase to the tune of “I Feel Pretty” from “West Side Story.” Try getting THAT one out of your head!

I’m pleased to see I’ve actually read a couple of these titles and have a few others on my shelves! That rarely happens…usually I’m behind when it comes to award lists.
