Ketchup

Okay, so I meant catch-up. But that’s a boring title for a post, isn’t it?

I still have books that I read last year that I never posted about. Poor neglected things. I feel guilty, because some of them were fabulous, and deserve posts of their own. But considering I read one of them last September (½ a year ago!!), at this point it’s lucky it’s just getting a mention.

I also feel guilty because the whole point of this blog is so I have a record of my reading…and no post = no record. So in order to sort of alleviate some of that guilt, I’m just going to post about the one thing that pops into my mind when I think of each book.

Every Book Its Reader Ketchup

Every Book Its Reader, Nicholas Basbanes
If you love books about books, than this is the book for you. And it’s so chock full of interesting things that I’m pretty certain that’s why I never posted about it…the thought was just a wee bit overwhelming.

Thumbing Through Thoreau: A Book of Quotations by Henry David Thoreau
Trisha got a group of us together and this little book is making the rounds. As we read it, we get to write our thoughts right in the book (I know, some of you just stroked out in horror).

The Rights of the Reader, Daniel Pennac
I read this after Erin mentioned it. So you can just go read her thoughts! (And boy, is that ever a cop-out.)

bliss 197x300 Ketchup

The Geography of Bliss, Eric Weiner
Not quite the blissful experience I was hoping for. Weiner is a little too snidely critical at times, which when you’re talking about happiness, doesn’t quite work. For me. And here’s another cop-out: Care has a post about this one!

the women jefferson loved 196x300 Ketchup

The Women Jefferson Loved, Virginia Scharff
Just what the title says: a non-fiction book about the women that Thomas Jefferson loved (his mom, his sisters, his wife, and yes, Sally Hemings). Very readable, but at times redundant and a bit too heavy on the supposition. As in the author assumes what people were feeling. I’m not a big fan of that in my non-fiction.

Chef Ketchup

Chef, Jaspreet Singh
I was totally with this one until the end, at which point there was a HUGE WTF moment and I got all confused. So confused that I’m actually glad I’m not writing an entire post on this one.

And for your entertainment, I’ll leave you with a cute poster illustrating The Rights of the Reader:

LOVE the Rights of the Reader! That is priceless.

I’m with you … I have books from last fall (and last summer) that I haven’t posted about. Some have reviews waiting in the queue for a “rainy day” but others I haven’t been able to muster up much of a coherent thought about. Some of those were pretty decent books, too. I might have to borrow your idea and write a one-sentence review of sorts (and there’s nothing wrong to linking to another blogger).

  6. Ok, so I purchased Every Book Its Reader thinking that it would be fabulous and I am to admit that I have never finished it. I would find the first couple of pages of each chapter really interesting, and then as I kept reading I couldn’t maintain any interest in the discussion about the books. So I would move on the to the next chapter and the same thing would happen again. I really want to like this one though and I just don’t seem to be able to. What do you think is wrong with me? I think that maybe its because it talks about so many books that i have never heard of it makes a little bit a. bored and 2. intimidated about all the great books out there that I have never read.

I was looking at a book at the bookstore yesterday that talked about the uses of literature. It sounded interesting, but I as I skimmed through it, I had similar thoughts…boring. And yes, I felt intimidated by all the authors and books that were mentioned! Who knows why some books resonate and others are just duds!
