This overview was blatantly stolen from Barnes and Noble. I figure I spend enough money with them, it’s the least they can do.

Newly divorced Dana Stellgarten has always been unfailingly nice—even to telemarketers—but now her temper is wearing thin. Money is tight, her kids are reeling from their dad’s departure, and her Goth teenage niece has just landed on her doorstep. As she enters the slipstream of post-divorce romance and is befriended by the town queen bee, Dana finds that the tension between being true to yourself and being liked doesn’t end in middle school…and that sometimes it takes a real friend to help you embrace adulthood in all its flawed complexity.

I enjoyed this book as I was reading it, but it hasn’t really stuck with me. My favorite character was the niece, but I can’t even remember her name. I am a bad, bad reader.

I also enjoyed this one while I was reading it. It was a bit foreign to me though, as I don’t have a sister. Just a much older brother with whom I have very little in common (well, we have our mom in common, and that’s pretty big (although she’s very short), but otherwise? Not much alike.). And now that I think about it, with the exception of my dad’s two older sisters, there is no one in my family who is a sister to a sister. All of my cousins, as well as my mom, are part of a brother-sister sibling set.

All this to explain why the whole sister thing didn’t really resonate with me. There’s a 6 ½ year age difference between my brother and me, so I don’t really get that whole sibling rivalry, love-hate thing, either. We were almost like two only children.

So this is why I liked this well enough when I read it, but I couldn’t relate and a month later, it’s pretty much gone from memory. I can’t even remember the Weird Sister’s weird names, even though they’re all named after Shakespearean characters. Maybe it’s the odd nicknames?

Also, I thought they all made really bad choices. Not that I’m judging or anything. Or maybe I am. Anyhoosie, plenty of other people have written reviews on this one, so I’ll be skipping the whole synopsis thingie.

I haven’t read the first book, but I did enjoy The Weird Sisters. I also don’t have any sisters, so I don’t think that the book struck me in the same way as it would if I had had a sister, but I did enjoy the relationships between the three. I also thought that they made a lot of pretty bad decisions as well though.

  2. I have been wanting to read Weird Sisters. Still do even though I too am “sisterless”… unless you count the hand picked friends that I placed in my life…. sometimes they are like sisters…. the good and the bad parts :)

I always feel badly when I finish a book and just days later I can barely remember it. Happens to the best of us though, which is why now that I am falling behind on reviews, it is becoming kind of problematic–I find myself forgetting the names of characters and also important plot points!

  5. You know what, you’re right. I spend enough friggin’ money with Barnes and Noble that if I want to use their synopsis for something, why the hell not? They can check my rewards card points thingy for confirmation.

I still want to read The Weird Sisters simply because I like the title. Silly, right?

I don’t think it’s a really good sign that you can’t understand the main theme of a book just because you didn’t have the same experience growing up. I am sister to a sister, and I can definitely understand the sibling rivalry thing, but I don’t think that happens as much now that we’re both adults as it used to… at least, not on my end, and she’s generally a better person than I am :-)

Shorter reviews seem to be all the rage right now. I have been reading a lot of them lately. Both of these books sound like fun summer reads. The Weird Sisters has been on my radar for a while now. I have a sister and we are really close; haven’t always been but we are now – we are only 18 months apart so that makes it easier for us to be friends now that we are older. I’m sure the sister thing will resonate a lot with me.

  10. Interesting review of the Weird Sisters. I’m reading it right now and I have to say that I really relate to the sisters’ relationship. This makes me wonder if I would enjoy it as much if not for that?

I go hot-cold on wanting to read The Weird Sisters. I might never ever get to it.
I, too, am part of a bro-sis sibling pair and as much as I love/like my brother cuz he is family, I don’t really talk to him very much and he has the ability to push buttons that infuriate me. Don’t quite get it, but he does and I probably annoy him the same.

I’m an only child — and proudly so. The Weird Sisters might not do much for me after all. Will prolly still give it a go since it’s an e-book freebie from Overdrive.

I liked The Weird Sisters for the story and the writing, but the sisters thing didn’t resonate with me either. That’s a relationship I will never understand, never having had one myself.
