The Great (California Book Bloggers) Escape!

Why are you looking at a picture of poppies? Because it’s the state flower of California! And Amy, Danielle, Florinda, Wallace and I are trying to conjure up the The Great (California Book Bloggers) Escape. And what is that, you ask? Well, it’s an excuse for book bloggers (and not just Californian ones either) to get together. We’re thinking it’ll be held one weekend in mid-to-late September 2011, most likely in or around the Santa Ynez Valley, which is north of Santa Barbara.

The location was chosen because it’s fairly central, but not too remote. The tentative plan is to kick off on Friday evening and end on Sunday. Activities are still being discussed, but are sure to include social time and bookstore outings, as well as a DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) hour or two.

We’re still plotting, but right now we’d like to see who all might be interested. Once we have a better idea of that, we’ll be able to share more details.

If you’re a California-based book blogger, author, or other bookish person, there’s a form below for you to let us know if the California Book Bloggers Retreat sounds good to you. Your information will only be shared with the planning team (that would be the aforementioned Amy, Danielle, Florinda, Wallace and Jill). Completing this form is NOT a commitment to attending – so if you like the idea but aren’t sure you’d be able to go, please fill it out anyway!

This announcement and links to the form will also appear at:

My Friend Amy (Amy (duh))
The 3 R’s Blog (Florinda)
There’s a Book (Danielle)
Unputdownables (Wallace)

Click on the poppies to go to the form. And remember, you only need to fill it out once!

It might be a mostly Southern Cal get together :-) . I grew up in Northern Cal, and Santa Barbara always seemed like a distant, exotic location to me. I still have never been to that town! Those of you getting together will have a lot of fun! And, I miss California poppies so much — it seems like they only thrive in Cal.

“Click on the poppies” reminds me of The Wizard of Oz, with the wicked witch going “paaaaahppies…paaaaaaaaahppies…” and makes me think this retreat has something to do with Oz. It sounds fantastic, though, and if someone would just get me to CA, I’d totally be in!
