Over the weekend I was all excited because I managed to pre-schedule various posts for the next few weeks. I was all excited because I thought I’d have more time to reply to comments and visit you all.
And then Sunday happened. I’m just going to cut and paste in blue the emails that have been sent to family and friends (not that you all aren’t my friends, too…you totally are!). The boyfriend (aka Hamburger aka Mitch) was in an accident (yes, again…the boy is both very unlucky and very lucky). Some of you heard me tweeting about it, but in the interest of time and not having to retype the same medical crap all over again, here’s what’s going on in our world (and please feel free to ignore this post right now if you’re here for books or don’t want to read about Mitch’s health…I know this is too long for most of you but I also know some people are wondering what’s up).
Mitch was in a motorcycle accident Sunday afternoon on the way home from his dad’s house. He didn’t see a car that was stopped to make a left turn until it was too late. He braked, laid his bike down and hit the back of the car. We were originally told he slid under the car, but the highway patrol said no, he hit the back and slid across the road.
He was conscious at the scene and impressed the CHP officer with how calm he was (and his pain threshold). He went to the ER by ambulance and they determined he has a compound fracture of the right femur and a compound fracture of the right arm. He also has some very deep lacerations on both arms (elbow areas) and his right leg. He was in surgery late Sunday night/early Monday am for over 3 hours to clean out and stitch up the wounds and to put an external rod on his right leg to hold the bones in place.
He still has to have further surgery on his right arm and his right leg. The break is pretty bad and messy for the arm and it was too intensive to address in the first surgery. The leg may or may not end up with either a rod in the leg or a cast. The doctors aren’t really saying much. They need to get his hemoglobin up before they’ll even consider another surgery, and as of tonight he’s had 2 units of blood and the counts are rising. We also have no idea on when he might be released and if further surgeries will be before or after he goes home. There’s a chance of arm surgery on Friday, but that’s just a chance.
No internal or head injuries and his hands are fine. He was wearing a full face helmet and gloves. He does have one broken rib but that may be from his last surf trip to Costa Rica. Most of his pain right now is from where the rods go into his legs. He’s also uncomfortable because he can’t really move around in the bed.
And a more recent update as of Wednesday mid-day:
His mom spent last night with Mitch and this was her news as of this morning…
Doc was concerned about irregular heart beats, had an ekg last night, and new medication, a mild beta blocker, some magnesium and pottasium. another ekg this morning and heart ultrasound. So far it looks like the treatment will work to keep his heart from working harder than it needs to, to organize the rhythm and make it more efficient.
And now for the exciting news…
Ultrasound and ekgs came back totally normal. Blood pressure and blood is improving and he has no temp. As long as he stays as is (or better), arm surgery will be Friday and leg surgery on Sunday. Yay! I was so excited I forgot to ask how long he might have to stay after the surgeries. So still no word on when he might be home, but we’re happy that the surgeries are coming up soon (although I’m sure to Mitch, Friday seems like an eternity away).
So that’s what’s happening in our world. Both of our families are here and we’ve got help and support out the wazoo. And although they don’t read my blog, I just have to say that we both have the most awesomest moms in the world.
Like I said, I’ve got some random posts scheduled so if it seems weird that I’m posting but not really around, that’s why. I’m not sure when life will get back to normal, but I am managing to reply to personal emails, so if you need me for something, that’s the ticket.
I hope YOU ALL are having a much better week.
And feel free to entertain me with comments!

Poor Hamburger. What a bad accident. I hope he has a quick and speedy recovery!

I did see your tweets and I’m relieved to see that Hamburger is making progress. There is no helmet law in South Carolina and very few people wear them here, and it scares me like you wouldn’t believe. I’m sending virtual hugs your way.

Thoughts are coming your way. Hamburger is so lucky – most especially for the love and support he is receiving. Good luck! I know it’s a long road ahead.

I’ll be thinking about Mitch (and you) over the next week or so. I hope the surgeries go well and that he heals quickly. Any chance he’d give up the motorcycle? Probably not.

Holy crap Jill. First I will just get this out of the way and say thank God there was no brain trauma. The coconut is the most important thing. Past that, this may be a long road but it sounds like he is doing well and I will pray that he heals quickly. See, there was a reason why you got all your posts done! You just didn’t know it at the time!

Yea for Mitch wearing his helmet. Who knows how bad it might have been otherwise. The best part of this post was that he doesn’t know if his broken rib is from the accident or surfing. That made me smile. He’s obviously a very strong guy!
Hope all goes well with the surgeries. It’s great to hear that you have lots of support. I do hope they aren’t giving him too much magnesium or that he’s off of it very soon. I was on it for 3 1/2 days when I was in labor and it made me crazy. Seriously, it messes with your mind (and eyes and ears…).
Sending lots of positive energy your way.

Hope all goes well with the surgery. My husband had a bad motorcycle accident in his mid-20′s and had to have several surgeries on a knee, but he came through it. He also avoided a lot of what could have happened because he was wearing appropriate gear. Long live Hamburger!

Oh my gosh, Jill – how scary! So sorry to hear about your uber stressful week. I’m so glad to hear he is safe, but still worrisome that there is so much still happening. Here’s to hoping for a safe, easy, quick recovery for Mitch.

Oh, Jill, I am so sorry to hear about this. I can imagine that the last few days have probably been a bit hair-raising for you, and I am sending a lot of good thoughts and prayers to hamburger. If there is anything you need, please let me know. I would be happy to help out in any way you need.

Mitch is charmed. I know he doesn’t feel that way right now, but he is. Thank goodness he is going to be okay. He might have quite a bit of PT coming his way, but that’s okay. He’ll get through it and you all have a lot of support to carry you through.
Thinking good thoughts. Keep us posted when you can.
So sorry to hear about this! Ever since Tony and I got scooters, being in some sort of riding related crash is one of my biggest fear. I have a friend who was really hurt by a drunk driver while we was out on a motorcycle, so although it sounds like Mitch/Hamburger had a rough time, it could be so much worse and I’m really glad to hear he is safe!

Oh, goodness, Jill. I’m glad he’s alive and hope the recovery is easier than it sounds. We had a much milder version of that happen to our son, recently. My future DIL is an MD in her third year of residency, currently working in trauma and she’ll be an ER doc. Son infuriated her by purchasing a moped and then made her even more upset by sliding out on someone else’s bike. They should make a really interesting pair, the doctor and the daredevil. He’s visiting us and the scars are really something. There are at least 3 of us trying to talk him into getting rid of the moped post haste. Guys and their toys.
What a terrible thing to happen to such a lucky unlucky guy. I’m glad to see you still have your sense of humor!

I’m late to post a comment here because I have been a bit “out of the loop” due to a crazy-ass work schedule. Let me just say, I am SO glad he had a helmet on and had no life threatening injuries. Motorcycle accidents just scare the crap out of me! Sounds like he will mend in time…but I can just imagine how stressed out you’ve been. Hang in there, Jill!!!

OMG Jill – I’m so sorry I’m just getting to this. I’m so out of touch regarding the blogs lately. Thank God he’s alive and had that helmet on! It sounds like he’s going to have a tough road ahead of him though. I’ll be thinking and sending good thoughts your way and his that things go really well with the surgeries and that his recovery is a smooth one. Hugs!
