Books, monsters, and songs (with a side of chocolate)

So Hamburger had his surgery last week (and since I know you’ve been wondering…there was no need to put any little cadaver cubes of bone into his arm after all) and I spent some quality time at the hospital (the surgery alone was almost 4 hours). The good news is the surgery went well and he already has more range of motion in his arm than he did before the surgery. AND, even better (I’m kidding…HB is (slightly) more important than my books)…this time, I got some reading done! Evidently, the surgeon is hot shit, because I got my own waiting room and a visit from “Distinguished Guest Services” to ask about my comfort. My own little personal waiting room had a door and a couch, so I cuddled up with my blanket (an important accessory when hanging out in hospitals) and proceeded to devour The Taker. (I’m an optimist…I figured HB was in good hands and there was no need to worry, so I concentrated on books instead.) There may or may not have been devouring of dark chocolate covered almonds, too (my stress manifests itself through cravings of sugar). And along with The Taker (which was good, by the way, good enough that I might just be able to get over the fact that there’s a sequel), I read The Island of Dr. Moreau and The Call of Cthulhu for Dueling Monsters (which means you have to wait for my opinions on those) and then I started Gone with the Wind (and someone please tell me if that with needs to be capitalized). It’s rough going. Almost a week later, I’m only on page 107. I’m not liking Scarlett much. Okay…at all. It all started on page 2 when she said she didn’t willingly open a book, and it’s been downhill ever since. Especially now that I’m at the part where she thinks she can flutter her eyelashes and Ashley will drop Melanie like a hot potato because Scarlett is so much cuter and she has the skinniest waist in three counties.

The bitch.

(After my rantish-rambling post last week, Andi commented that she thought I talked like this in real life, too. Only when I’m wound up and/or stressed out or forgotten why it is that I don’t drink caffeine. Really, I’m quite laid-back, I swear.)

In other news, Dueling Monsters starts in 9 days. Have you picked your monster yet? Not that I’m trying to influence you, but I just ordered this little cutie as a prize for one lucky reader of The Call of Cthulhu.

cthulhu Books, monsters, and songs (with a side of chocolate)Come on…you know you want one.

PS: I need someone to tell me what Fiddler on the Roof song I need to be rewriting for Jenners, because I can’t find the original comment or post and I know squat about Fiddlers and I’m all out of dark chocolate covered almonds and I leave for Boston in 2 1/2 weeks. Help!

I’m thinking I might just read those two books for Readathon. Trying to think of selections now, since I…um…don’t have a TBR anymore and therefore am not sure what I’m going to read in a few weeks…

Glad surgery went well! That’s great news. And speaking of chocolate covered almonds, I almost wrote sugary instead of surgery, hmmm.

I downloaded The Call of Cthulhu, haven’t gotten to it yet. So glad that HB is doing well and doesn’t have to have dead bits inserted. Would that have made him part Zombie? That would leave the door open for endless jokes!

  3. Great news on the surgery!!

I’m glad you liked The Taker. I met Alma Katsu at SIBA and she’s wonderful.

I think you’re supposed to be rewriting “I Wish I Were a Rich Man.”

Glad the surgery went well! Yay for no cadaver bones!

I hated Scarlett from page one too! I still hated her at the end, but I ended up liking the book overall (not quite loving). I thought the book was pretty slow in the first half with pockets of more interesting bits. The second half picks up the pace and I found myself wanting to keep reading.

I think you’ve convinced me to go ahead and join the dueling monsters. I’m for sure going to read The Call of Cthulhu, but I’m hoping to sneak in the second one as well.

Glad to hear some good news! I hate Scarlett too! Let’s start a club where we bash her. I loved the book though. I’ve been thinking of rereading it.

Glad to hear HB is ok! And here’s the comment from Jenners (it was on your Madame Bovary post):

“And I was wondering if I could request a song parody from you? It is based on the title of my recent book hoarding post, “If I Were A Hoarder.” (and what I hoard is books, of course). The song tune, of course, is “If I Were A Rich Man” from Fiddler on the Roof. I just think you could make it something amazing. No pressure though.”

Yay for Hamburger!! And I’m impressed you were able to get any reading in.

Ok, I just downloaded BOTH books–will be my first ebook experience outside of the major fail that was Ulysses. But I’m definitely team Chluthu right now–if only because it’s shorter.

Disliked Scarlett and really the book as a whole. But did a lot of research around it in grad school (just so I could justify finishing it) so it kind of grew on me.

I think I am going to read both dueling monsters. I already downloaded them both to my kindle.

As for Scarlett, yes, she is annoying. But that’s what makes the story so entertaining. And she and Rhett together . . . my favorite literary couple, for sure!

And I kind of love the way you talk about Scarlett, now I am not going to read that book until I forget what you said about her lol!

Now there, I am craving for Dark Chocolate covered Almonds … no just chocolate would be very satisfying.. :)

So glad to hear that the surgery went well, yay!!! I am also glad that you liked the Taker. I really liked it a lot as well. I can’t say I’ve had much experience with Gone with the Wind as a whole, because although I have it, I have not read it yet. Is the song you are trying to work on for Jenners the “If I was a rich man” song? If so, I might be able to help.

I’m so glad the hot shit surgeon did so well on HB’s arm (and didn’t have to use parts of dead people). You got a lot of reading done! Yowza! And Scarlett isn’t exactly endearing, is she?

Yay, the surgery is done! And it helped! That’s excellent. I’m glad you got some quality reading done, too. I’m planning to at least read Moreau, and Cthulhu if I have time. Though your monster bribe is very tempting!

    Great news for Hamburger!
I’ve only seen the movie, but I never liked Scarlett and never understood the appeal. Which makes the fact that if we’d had a baby girl we would have named her Tara kind weird, right?

Great to hear that HB came through the surgery so well. My hubs had to have surgery a month ago, which lasted 7 hours and involved something like a dozen people sitting with me. While I did appreciate the support and the fact that they all loved my hubs enough to want to be there, I think I would have rather been sitting in that private little room, letting myself sink into a book and not thinking so much about the surgery.
