May? Seriously?

Holy crap, it’s May (okay, it’s still April as I’m typing this, but only for four more hours…so again, I say, holy crap). That means summer is just around the corner. I’m really not ready for that, people. It rained last week…in my mind, that means it’s still winter.

April was pretty much a non-event blog-wise. I kind of tuned out and dropped out. I even entertained thoughts of quitting (for no other reason than non-interest on my part). But then I think about how much I’d miss all of you and how I’d have no one to talk with (even when it’s a one sided conversation). Plus, my BFF is moving to freakin’ Idaho at the end of the month, so then I’ll really have no one to talk to, especially about books.

Boo-hoo.

And while I’m having a pity party…I have a sunburn on the back of my neck (my reward for a bike ride) and a headache, and consequently I feel like crap. Not sick…just that grumpy, icky feeling that comes from sunburn. Mostly caused by the fact that I’m pissed I got a sunburn in the first place. It wasn’t even that hot out!

Okay, enough with the whining. Note to self: never blog sunburned.

April was, overall, a fun month. There were a few glitches, but lots of good times. I’d write a letter to April (like I did to January and February), but I still owe March a letter. Kind of like I owe the last 6 or so books that I’ve read a blog post. So why I’m writing this drivel instead of focusing on all of that? Good question.

My reading picked up a wee bit, although the audio listen of Einstein has come to a screeching halt. Oh, and the Zinn readalong. That seems to have come to a screeching halt, too. Or maybe it’s suffering from a flat tire. Whatever. The book has become hellaciously boring, Jenners quit (more power to her), and although I’m not quite ready to concede defeat, it’s not looking too good for ol’ Zinn.

But Kim and I are doing a buddy read of Catch-22 this month, so expect some craziness ahead.

I’ll also be in San Francisco for a weekend (with friends, so thanks for all of the meet-up offers, but I have to pass this time), doing my monthly drive to Fresno for a work meeting (woo-hoo), thinking about when to squeeze in a day trip to Santa Barbara with my mom, having good-bye lunches with the Idaho-bound BFF, and going on walks and bike rides with HB (who seems to think if he stops moving he’ll rust). Oh, and blogging.

I hope.

I have several times entertained thoughts of quitting this month too…

Sunburn sucks. And makes you feel terrible. I hope that icky, dehydrated feeling goes away for you quickly!

I can’t WAIT to hear your posts about Catch-22! It’s been about 4 years since my last reread of that one, so I’m tempted to join in with you two. :D

We are too hard on ourselves about the occasional blogging lull! You update this place like you’re a perpetual motion machine or something, so taking a week or two here and there is to be expected!

I pretty much never sunburn, but Tony burns pretty much if he’s even thinking about going outside so I know second-hand how terrible that can be. And how frustrating it is when you get burned on days where it is seemingly overcast and not that hot. Somehow that makes it even worse!

  4. I also got an AWFUL sunburn out at the pool yesterday. I’m so mad at myself for not putting on enough sunscreen. I was just thinking “It’s still April, I’ll just put on a little.” Hrmph. My poor back, it hurts to move. :(

    Hope your neck heals quickly!

I also can’t believe that it’s May, and am saddened that the year is flying by, and that it’s almost summer. Florida in the summer is not a place I like. Hot and insanely humid just make me an angry camper. I am sure you can relate.

Add me to the list of those who’ve considered quitting blogging this month.

Sunburns do suck. Though I haven’t had to worry about it since moving from San Diego to Scotland. I don’t think it’s even possible to get a sunburn here. Well, maybe one or two days a year.

Yay for Catch-22! I read it in high school and loved it. I bought a copy for myself for Christmas this past year, but haven’t cracked it open yet. I’m really curious as to how I will feel about it 15 years later. Hope you enjoy it. I found it hilarious.

WHOA-HO what is this talk of quitting? That is NOT acceptable. Get it out of your head, RIGHT NOW.

    Ahem.

That is to say, I would miss you terribly. Who else would I have to snark with? And who would make marvelous bookish songs out of one-hit-wonder 80s pop songs? And who would read obscure stuff, so I didn’t have to do it myself?

    DO YOU SEE MY DILEMNA?

Glad you’re staying chicka. And ten-thousand apologies on the sunburn. I’m glad I don’t get those things. Yay Cherokee blood!

  11. I so get you. How did May get here so quickly? It just feels wrong, bloody wrong. In fact, I pre-dated my post, today, because it’s about poetry and I hate to think I totally missed out on National Poetry Month. So I’m cheating. Haha. Because I can. :)

I was very bloggy-blah in April, too! I just have the doldroms. Also, I seem to be posting about books I really find interesting but that no one else really does ;-)

I also seem to have been living under a rock because I really DID miss all the bloggy drama these past couple of weeks. Sigh- so much drama.

You’re definitely not alone in screeching to a halt on blogging in April. I’ve been doing what I have to do but not much more and I mostly don’t feel bad about it at all. Here’s hoping we get our reading mojo back so that we have something we really want to blog about!

We’re in the doldrums here, too – caught in rain that we desperately need, but also needing to get out of the house after a long (but, thankfully, fairly snow-free) winter.

I had to read Catch-22 in college and hated it (in all fairness I skipped about 150 in the middle) BUT Jason listened to it last year and loved it so I may try a reread someday. I am right there with you with the HOLY HELL WHERE DID THIS MONTH GO kind of feeling. Of course, I’m already lamenting the loss of May. Where did it go? How is next weekend Memorial Day already. I’ve contemplated giving up on my little corner of the internet several times in recent months, but I’d be too sad to lose my last toe-hold in the bookish world… although I post so rarely lately I’m not sure anyone would even notice.
