Big excitement!!! You will never guess what happened yesterday!!
I saw a banana slug (I told you you wouldn’t guess.)
Why is a banana slug exciting? Well, because we were on a steam train cruising through the redwood forest outside of Santa Cruz, and the conductor told us to be on the lookout because banana slugs like to cruise around in redwood forests, so I was hoping to see a little palish-yellow blob on the forest floor. I had actually stopped looking when I saw IT (really, it was hard to miss as it was crawling up a tree (at least I think it was going up…hard to tell with slugs) and it was freakin’ ginormous (for a slug), so there was no point in all the prior eye strain). I all but screamed at Hamburger “Oh my god, LOOK AT THE BANANA SLUG!”
Unfortunately, the train was moving and my cell phone was in my pocket, so I don’t have photographic evidence, but I swear the thing was easily 8 inches long, bright yellow, and looked just like this:
Isn’t he cute?
No?
Okay, then you probably don’t want your child applying for college at UC Santa Cruz:
Yep, their mascot really is a banana slug. And he reads Plato…smart cookie, that slug.

I remember the first time I saw one, and probably in the very same place! I was super excited! Must be a Jill thing….
EW.
That thing is totally disgusting but…strangely fascinating.
Wow. Kinda cool, isn’t it? 8″ long? That’s amazing.
I’ve never seen one of these. Pretty darn cool looking!
I am not really sure that would be a highlight for me, but I do get that it is kind of cool.
I have a thing about slugs (not a good thing) and this one looks big and yellow. Cute in comparison to most, but he’s still ooky!
I would have freaked out if I saw a banana slug. Slug = gross. Big giant yellow ones = really gross. And here I thought the Oregon Duck was a bad mascot.
Wait WHAT! Is that a real thing? That’s the most appalling insect I’ve ever seen! I’m never going to be able to sleep again because I’m going to be scared a banana slug will come in through the window, crawl up my wall and across my ceiling, and drop on me from above. And I will dream I’m eating a banana but I’ll actually be eating a banana slug.
I’d just like to state that EVEN THOUGH JENNY JUDGED ME for my hatred of butterflies, I am going to sympathize with her newfound fear of banana slugs and the nightmares that they can populate. Fear is real, Jenny. Fear. Is. Real.
So yucky. But strangely cool. I had a high school friend that went to UC Santa Cruz and we used to make fun of him because of the mascot.
If I’m to be honest, it’s kinda gross looking!
That and Captain Trips will give me nightmares tonight. He kind of looks like the snots I imagine coming out of those characters’ noses (and sometimes Elle’s).
