Vacations, books, and readalongs

Hello from Oregon!

sunriver Vacations, books, and readalongs

I am vacationing this week. HB and I are at his yearly family reunion. 20 people, 2 houses…it is mostly good times, with interludes of too much family togetherness. Yesterday we raced go karts with the teenagers (always fun) and played mini-golf (we made it through 9 holes before we decided that lunch was more important than the remaining 9). But I also got lots of walking in. Which is good, because there are also lots of opportunities to eat.

Today I am going to attempt to escape some of the family togetherness and go search out a bookstore in Bend. I have to take advantage of the no sales tax!

In other news…

I am reading The Dud Avocado, which is surprisingly funny. And also a bit scandalous.

6 hours later.

I was interrupted by a niece begging for people to go on a bike ride with her. So I bike rode. And then completed the aforementioned escaping task. I now am back and seem to have acquired 4 more books than I had this morning. Did I mention Oregon has no sales tax? I am a firm believer that I must take advantage of this while I am here. (I also have a new pair of capris, flip-flops, and a sweatshirt. And another book that I bought yesterday. I am doing my part to help Oregon’s economy.)

Remember this post? Well, Christina and I will be working out the details shortly, but there will definitely be an IT-along in September (I bought my copy today! I had to visit three bookstores before I found it, though. Horror doesn’t seem to be a big thing up here…). So stay tuned for more details. And clown noses. I am also plotting the return of Dueling Monsters. This year’s throwdown will most likely be American Psycho v. Red Dragon (I bought my copies today!). Psychopaths anyone?

It’s shaping up to be a scary next few months. If you’re looking for me, I might just be cowering in the corner muttering something about clowns and brains. I’m currently more than a little freaked out just knowing that there are THREE SCARY BOOKS sitting in a bag on the other side of the room.

I am also going to join in the North and South readalong that Andi and Heather are hosting. Since that starts tomorrow, I really should stop with the procrastinating and open up the iPad (I’ll be reading this one on my nook app).

 Vacations, books, and readalongs

Now I’m off to read! Or maybe take a nap…

Man that is some big country. I know how these large get-togethers go. You have to seek out peace, just a corner somewhere. All that bonding can get on one’s last nerve at times. As far as being scared, you might be…IT is pretty scary. But you will also have a ball. I couldn’t stop reading, I just devoured the thing, forsaking everything else in life like food. Now go find a quiet corner and take a nap!!

When I lived in OR I was too young to really take advantage of that no sales tax thing. But I remember people from Washington, California and Idaho used cross state lines to buy goods.

I’m not reading along with anyone, but N&S is the only one I’d be able to handle.

Package is on its way to you. Please do not do any more scary things until you get this package. I did not pay to have it arrive by Thursday but I was hinted that it *should* arrive Thursday. So let’s say Friday? When will you be home? Perhaps it will be sitting on your front step waiting for you…

NO SALES TAX?! Guessing there must be a state income tax (which Texas doesn’t have). Wow–I’d totally be taking advantage of that, too!

I’m really starting to wonder how I’m getting talked into all of these horror books! Good news is that I already have American Psycho and library has IT on audio (45 hours) so I’ll just need to find Red Dragon. Hopefully it’s not too long?

Hope you have a wonderful time! Family time is fun but always a little tougher when they’re the “in-laws”

Oh, how I would love to visit a bookstore that has no sales tax! I could probably come home with quite a few that I would add to the ever mounting stacks. I hope that you have fun over there. I might actually be visiting Oregon in the fall to meet up with my FIL. Perhaps I will email you to ask where the good haunts are!

Sounds like you are having a lot of fun here in Oregon! I just got back from a mini vacation hiking in the redwoods. Out of all of Stephen King’s books IT is the one that scares me the most (I haven’t read it, but saw a few minutes of the movie when I was a teenager – it was enough to scar me and give me a fear of clowns). So I probably won’t be stopping by for those posts, but you never know. I guess it depends on if scary clown images are included. :)

  9. We went to Oregon in June. How is it that no one mentioned that Oregon has no sales tax?! I tried to go to the bookstore in Bend, but it was closed (never really found out why). We were off rock hunting in eastern Oregon and then made a big loop through Crater Lake and up the coast and back to Portland.

I would love to visit Oregon someday, the no sales tax is an incentive for a shopping vacation :) I have It on my shelf, but have no confidence that I could keep up with the reading schedule.

An annual family reunion might be too much family for me; glad you’ve found a way to balance the family, fun, walking, and tax-free shopping :)

  14. I never even think about not having sales tax until I shop in another state, and then every single time I’m all, “Oh crap–the sales tax!” and digging around in my purse for more money.

Thanks for doing your part to help the Oregon economy stumble its way along!
