I wasn’t going to sign up for Book Blogger Appreciation Week (BBAW), but it’s hard not to. I didn’t last year and kinda missed it, even though I really don’t think of myself as a book blogger anymore. Just a book reader, and blogger of things that usually relate to books, but not always. I like the freedom from the label, you know?
Anyhoosie. I signed up. But who knows what all I’ll manage to post about. I have to drive to Fresno for work on Tuesday, so that day is shot. And Hamburger returns from Costa Rica on either Tuesday night or Wednesday. Probably Wednesday. He’s done this trip many times, and has yet to make the connecting flight in Houston that gets him home on Tuesday, and honestly, I’m always relieved, because then I don’t have to pick him up from the airport at midnight. This year I’m just leaving the surf van at the airport on Tuesday night (after that whole Fresno thing) and I’ll see him when I see him. Plus, I’m still doing the regular 10 hour day work schedule, which makes doing anything other than work, eat, catch up with HB, read a little bit, sleep, repeat difficult during the week.
Excuses, excuses. I could totally bang out some posts tonight and tomorrow for the week, but I still have minimal time to blog hop and comment, which, to me, is a big part of BBAW.
So we’ll see how this goes. In a world where I a) was independently wealthy b) needed no sleep c) was more organized and/or d) had a clone well then, I’d be lovin’ on all of y’all all week long.
********************
I figure if I’m signing up for things, I might as well just put it all into one giant post. Didn’t I just stress the importance of multi-tasking?
Yep, that’s right. I’m officially joining Carl’s R.eaders I.mbibing P.eril challenge. This is the 7th year of the challenge, and I think the second time I’ve done it.
During the months of September and October, I will be reading:
- IT (’cause of, you know, the IT-along)
- American Psycho (hello, Dueling Monsters)
- Red Dragon (hello again, Dueling Monsters)
- one other book, so that this isn’t entirely all about my own readalongs and challenges…I am willing to listen to convincing arguments as to what this book should be
That’s right, people. I’m committing to Peril the First, the four book option.
I probably should say I’m doing Peril the Third (the one book option), since I had plans to read three of those books already, but if I’m reading horror, dammit, I’m damn well going to milk it for all it’s worth.
Will you be R.I.P.-ing? If not, why not? It’s pretty much the event of the season (Carl is da man when it comes to hosting challenges)…join the fun!

I finished most of my BBAW posts today. -ish. They still need some work, but I like participating.

I didn’t even officially sign up for BBAW, so at least you are doing better than me. Honestly, I was only going to do the interview swap and that’s about it this year. I do like your idea of not committing to the label.
Here, here for RIP and for reading horror. Speaking of which, I need to get back to The Little Stranger….

I’ve had American Psycho on my shelf for years, but can’t quite bring myself to read it. I’ve heard too much about it.

I had a very similar post yesterday. But I have ‘t signed up for anything.

Book suggestions: They Thirst by Robert McCammon. The Wolf’s Hour by the same author. First one is vampires eating L.A., second is a werewolf spy on the side of the Allies in WWII.
McCammon has written lots of horror, including the magnificent Swan Song, which is another riff on the end of the world scenario. Some folks call it his version of King’s The Stand, which I suppose in some respects it is, but the end of the world comes about in a completely different fashion.
I’m suggesting They Thirst or The Wolf’s Hour instead because Swan Song is an ENORMOUS book, close to 1000 pages if I remember correctly, and these two are average, knock it out in a weekend length.
Also: Faerie Tale by Raymond Feist. What happens when the faerie world intersects with the human world. Hint: it’s not sweetness and light. Neverwhere or American Gods by Neil Gaiman. In fact, you should read Neil Gaiman regardless, if not for this book challenge, than for the sheer pleasure of his writing. Neverwhere is about a young man who follows a young woman into the London underground and the whole new world he finds down there. American Gods takes classic mythology and folk tale figures to a contemporary United States on a road trip you’ll never forget.
I have to go to work. I’ll come back later with more suggestions.

I’m going to start American Psycho this weekend!!! Red Dragon hasn’t come in yet. (Secretly though, I’m pretty much already sold that Bateman is creepier. Batemen? Bateman? Batman?)

I’m baaaa…acccck. And I was going to give more book titles but I decided instead to write a blog post for just that purpose. Come back tomorrow. Or maybe later tonight. Depends on how long it takes to link everything…

OBVIOUSLY, the label book blogger does not apply to you. Nobody puts Jill in a box.

BBAW kind of snuck up on me and I realize I’m not going to be able to do anything with it. Oh well … at least I’m going to let it RIP.

I was just thinking about It the other night – I’m reading King’s 11.22.63 and there’s a huge It tie-in to it (not necessary to read first or anything, but a nice little meta-world moment.) American Psycho was too much for me, though.
Great list! Happy reading to you.

Great that you are joining us once again. I hope you get to all that you want to read and have a lovely, creepy time with it!
And I hope you enjoy BBAW as well!

I managed the “appreciate” post of BBAW but that was it – I should have known better! You obviously have a more realistic handle on what’s feasible during a busy week!
