Howdy fellow It-along-ers! It’s time for our halfway point check-in (or, really, just a wherever you happen to be check-in).
But! Before we get to the good stuff, it’s time to deliver (belatedly!) on my promise of gifts for those of you who were brave enough to post a nose shot (or two or three). My faithful sidekick Billy has picked the three winners:
He also didn’t want anyone to feel left out, so he’d like Princess Clown Nose, Natalie and Angela to send him their addresses, too, so he can send them a small token of his appreciation. Billy can be reached at fizzybeverage at gmail dot com.
And now, on to today’s featured event…
I don’t seem to have as much to say about IT (so far), compared to The Stand, but here are a few thoughts:
We all float down here. AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!
I have noticed that King seems to latch on to a certain phrase and then proceeds to beat us over the head with it for the rest of the book. In The Stand it was Baby Can You Dig Your Man (more a song than a phrase, but still…). I just started listening to 11/22/63 and I’m already tired of Life Turns on a Dime. We all float down here, however, is creep-tastic.
Water, water, everywhere.
And what is going on with the mention of the turtles??
It’s hard not to compare to The Stand, since that was my inaugural King (at least fiction-wise) and both books are freakin’ doorstops. So far The Stand has resulted in stronger emotions, both in the “I can’t put this down” department, and the “OMG this character is bugging the shit out of me” department, not to mention the “Let’s get on with it” department. I’m reserving judgement though, since after 600 pages of build up I am expecting greatness from the rest of this book. Or else.
So after 600 pages, I’m ready for something to happen. Something BIG. I’m tired of the back story and the foreshadowing and the mention of turtles and floating and water and I’m ready to Get On With It. Come on, King. Scare my pants off. I dare ya.

How about the rest of ya? What do you think so far? Have you written any posts about your thoughts? If so, link up!

I do not remember that 11/22/63 had a “phrase” but I won’t argue that The Stand had one and YES “we all float down here is in this one.

Oh its coming. He just makes you work for it. Nothing is free in Uncle Stevie-land. Yes with 11/22/63, another phrase is (I think I have this right) “history is obdurate”. He repeats it a lot but it is also worth repeating because history is not so easily changed and it started to really scare me a little. Good stuff baby.

First Ms. Fizzy Jilly Soda Pop you are a *rockstar* for being in charge of the Mr. Linky jazz. Every time I try to do a Mr. Linky, I Fail. I truly have no idea what I’m doing wrong but it’s got to be a universe is against me kinda thing.
And what? You are BORED by It? Geez Louise, this book haunts me more than The Stand. I told Care via Twitter that the clown is like the Freddy Kruger of clowns – he finds what’s going to scare the crap outta you and BAM turns into it. I think my fear would be a class filled with kids ala Children of the Corn like. That or running out of coffee.
Also, I told Trish via HER post that I looked up the Turtle thing and there’s too many people who search out the Symbolism in It. To each their own, I suppose. My favorite line is Beep Beep. I’m wondering how I can incorporate it in my classroom. Someone should create a zombified Road Runner – beep beep.
Aiight. I’m off to Step class. I got all Motivated this Sunday morning and woke up Early. Hopefully there’s no crashing mid-afternoon.
Cheerio!

I hate hate hate when authors do that with a phrase, even if it is telling us something about the character (like, how annoying he or she is!). In the Jack Reacher books, it is “back in the day…”. makes me want to scream!

Hee! Why do you think I’ve had that phrase in almost all of my IT-related posts? (I actually use it in real life, too, virtually every time I see balloons, because I’m just that nerdy. Most of the time, nobody gets it, but those that do? Those are my people.)

I am enjoying all the nose pictures. Fun!

So funny because I’m SO much more drawn to this one than I was with The Stand. Maybe because I’m able to actually do some reading with my listening. The Stand was too drawn out that this one feels more suspenseful/actiony to me.
Though, at the beginning I did want to warn all the characters about Captain Trips. And when Richie stumbled upon the rock concert with all the dead artists I totally expected Larry to be playing Baby Can You Dig Your Man.

Yay! Gage’s future embarrassment is my gain
I will be posting my IT update tomorrow, but I admit right now that I am way behind. I do think I can catch up, but only if I can stop wanting to sleep after I read more than 10 or 15 pages. Kinda slows me down!

I’m only 200 pages in and I’m already wondering what the deal is with the turtle. I’m hoping to catch up this week as I’m almost finished with my other read-along book.
As much as I enjoy Stephen King’s stories, I’ve always been a little frustrated with how long he takes to get things going. His character development is excellent, but sometimes it’s a slog to read through it. It is possible to provide too much detail.

The phrase did bother me in The Stand, if only because I thought it was silly. I do, however, find we all float to be fantastic.
You are right, King does grab a phrase and wants to make it catchy, so he repeats it often. It can be a bit tiresome, but I find that I keep repeating it myself, even after I finish a book. You know, sorta like “Laws yes, M-O-O-N, that spells repetitive!”
The turtle is killing me, I must know what the heck he’s talking about!

It’s true about the catch-phrase. If you go through King’s books, you’ll see him use a signature phrase in nearly every book he’s written. I tend to notice it the most though in the epic ones (IT, Stand, etc.).
