Do you like to read books about bookish things? Well then, have I got a book for you:
(I am absolutely in love with the cover of this baby.)
While I’ve only been to a handful of the stores featured, it was still fascinating to read about them all. Because I’m a dork like that.
And while many of the authors interjected quite a bit of me, me, me into the essays (you know, the whole “When I was writing my first award-winning, best selling, it went platinum novel, the first of thousands of award winners, blah, blah, blah”) there are a few that just shine.
I am particularly fond of Pico Iyer’s (Pico Iyer!) piece on Chaucer’s in Santa Barbara, which is the closest-to-me store that appears in the book. Although I have yet to experience the friendliness of the booksellers (they’ve always been borderline rude when I’ve been in there), I still love what Iyer has to say.
Another favorite is the Powell’s essay by Chuck Pahlniuk. Possibly because Powell’s is my favorite bookstore EVER.

Yes! Micawbers in St. Paul is (one of) my favorites! And I have to give props to Louise Erdrich for talking about Magers & Quinn (also a fine store), when Erdrich herself owns a bookstore (Birchbark Books) that’s quite lovely.
Freaking Massachusetts man. Why do they get all the good ones? At least Florida has two. I’m actually thinking that I need to check out that one in Deland if it is still there.
The cover is awesome. I’m curious that there are no bookstores mentioned in VA or MD. Very strange.
I love books about books and bookstores, so this is an immediate want for me. I love the idea of authors reflecting on their favorite bookstores. It sounds fascinating.
Ugh, of course there isn’t a single one in Indiana. Oh well, I’ve still been to some of those (like the amazing Powell’s) and I love books on bookstores, so I will be reading this one.
I am so glad that Chaucer’s is on the list! I LOVE CHAUCER’S. And, I’ve not had rude helpers at all.
Boo, nothing from Virginia. But still, that’s a fabulous list of bookstores. I’ve only visited The Strand. It would be awesome to check out all these stores.
Ooh! Ron Carlson! My favorite.
I’d probably enjoy skimming through this.
ZOMG I love books about books!
This book looks awesome – I’ve been to 14 of the ones in MA, RI, CT ME, NY and VT.
There are two relatively close to me: Wichita KS and St. Louis MO. I’d love to take a cross-country tour of nothing but bookstores.
We could stay at my parents house in Kansas…
I’ve been to one! the one on Martha’s Vineyard! woot. I’ll have to check out the one that is in the town my parents live in.
This is a great list to keep on hand when traveling. I am glad to some of my NY favorites on there and also Bank Square in Mystic, CT!
OOH this looks fantastic – I love books like this. I have been in that Minneapolis book store a few times.
I’ve always wanted to visit Vroman’s in Pasadena. Maybe one day. . .
I’ve been to 3 and agree that they are awesome. Strand, Tattered Cover, Book Loft). Looks like I need to do a bookstore tour of California!
I love this list. It makes me want to go on a book store road trip to visit all of these bookstores! How poetic would that be to visit each bookstore and buy a book by the author that wrote the essay on that particular store? I’m definitely going to be adding this to my TBR list and then the road trip planning can commence.
Miss you. That is all.
Miss your evarvesence, or however you spell it.
Happy birthday!!
Yep, Lemuria Books is now my local and it is definitely an awesome place. I keep trying to get Simon Van Booy to sign at Lemuria. No luck, so far. They do prefer local authors.
Miss your posts, lady. Wish you’d come back.
